Synopsis: The villainess. The sensual woman. The mad one. The naïf. Between 2007 and 2008, I worked as a soap opera's scriptwriter for Portuguese television. "Videonovela" is the result of an attempt to dissect and disjoin the stage directions and dialogues of the screenplays I wrote during that period. Constituting a reflection about identity and feminine stereotypes in contemporary pop culture, "Videonovela" combines a self-referential mise en scène of scenes from real soap opera’s screenplays with the manipulation of broadcasted footage, and a sound counterpoint composed with fragments and quotations from modernist literature and cinema.
